Oak Harbor readies for Race Week 2009 July 12-17

The lagging economy has reduced the number of boats entered in this year's Whidbey Island Race Week, but that won't deter from the spectacle and speed of wind-powered racing when the 27th annual event kicks off Sunday, July 12.

Seven golfers qualify for district tournament

Seven Oak Harbor golfers have qualified to play in the Washington Junior Golf Association district championship scheduled for July 20 and 21 at Dungeness Golf Course after shooting some good scores in sub-district marches June 24 at Mill Creek and June 25 at the Gallery Golf Course in Oak Harbor.

Hu high point winner in Federal Way

The North Whidbey Aquatic Club’s John Hu won the boys 15-and-over high- point award at last weekend’s West Coast Invitational swim meet held June 27 and 28 in Federal Way. Hu won three events, scored in five others, and set a team record of 25.39 in the 50-meter freestyle to lead the Aquajets to an eighth-place team finish with 691 points.

Inmates battle over shoes, trial delayed

A 32-year-old Snohomish man in Island County jail on felony domestic-violence charges assaulted a fellow inmate during a fight over shoes, according to the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

Adrianna Royal fifth best steeplechaser in nation

The steeplechase is not an event included in high school track and field meets but for Adrianna Royal, it’s just another challenge. Royal is a three-sport athlete at Oak Harbor High School, where she competes on the cross country team in the fall, plays basketball in the winter and runs track in the spring.

Summer camps build championship teams

Coaches know that winning teams aren’t created in preseason practice. At most high schools there are only two or three weeks of practice prior to the first game, and that isn’t nearly enough time to get players in shape, evaluate and make decisions who will be on the varsity roster, teach everyone what the game plan is going to be this year and all the other little things that go into the creation of a championship team.
