Maybe Koster would care about library

Dear Congressman Larsen: Oak Harbor has outgrown its current library and is in desperate need of a new library. This is a major issue in this area and garners strong support. The Oak Harbor mayor, Jim Slowik, offered a location in central Oak Harbor. This site would have helped to revitalize the central city core. Skagit Valley College was interested in acquiring the library’s current location, to help with its expansion program. This project would have created a number of jobs and helped the local economy.

Rural character more than visual

I moved to Whidbey Island early in 2001 from Minneapolis, where I lived happily near the city center, on the 14th floor of my condo overlooking Interstate 35W, the downtown skyscrapers, and the winding Mississippi and its bridges, with an expansive view of sunsets and approaching storms. Here I am a renter, living happily on a corner of Ebey’s Reserve, in San de Fuca, again loving the very different visual beauty but also the remarkable peace and quiet, which I had not experienced since my adolescence in the Nebraska countryside, having lived contentedly in cities (including Glasgow, London, and Houston) all my previous adult life.

Not so many believe in God

In the March 13 issue, columnist Joan Bay Klope stated that “92 percent of Americans believe in God.” This is completely untrue. At this time there are at least 15 percent of Americans who are non-believers (that is over 45 million people!). We can have a contest here.

Unite against alien invasion

The Whidbey News-Times letters section has become boring. I’m tired of reading about one-way streets, property taxes, seedy city councilmen and global warming. Quite frankly, people need to wake up to the real threat posed against all peoples, cultures and societies: Alien invasion.

You never know who’s packing

Well isn’t that precious, another cartoon about guns and even in color (Whidbey News-Times, March 13). It again appears that our cartoonist has an anti-gun agenda, but let’s look at reality. Many of our fellow citizens have a “License To Carry Concealed Pistol — State of Washington,” issued after going through finger printing and an extensive background check. Didn’t know that, did you? When you see that person who has this permit as they enter a restaurant or other place of business, you usually glance at them, then away, without ever knowing that they may be armed.

Throw precaution to the wind

To add to Mr. Moreland’s letter of March 6, the planet was cooling from 1940 to 1975 and in the first Earth Day (April 1970) the major subject was the coming ice age. The planet has been cooling slightly ever since 1998 according to climatologists.

Do the right thing and cut

State Sen. Lisa Brown wants to use a horrible tactic to raise taxes. She is going to use class envy to get the middle class and poor to vote in an income tax on the “higher wage earners” (those earning $200,000) in exchange for reducing the sales tax upon themselves. If this goes through, how many of these “higher wage earners” will stick around Washington state very long, much less hire any more of the middle class and poor.

Think twice before littering

Consideration is something everybody wants. Unfortunately, it’s not something everybody gives. To do both is called The Golden Rule. I live a block from OHHS. We have a public access trail that runs between our back yard and our neighbor’s. It’s been there for as least as long as the high school has been and provides a shortcut to students and others through Springtree.

Seeing commies through the smoke

It would appear with a recent letter on these pages that “global warming a.k.a. climate change” has taken a more sinister turn. The writer in question suggests that Communists have infiltrated the environmental movement to push “global warming” on us unsuspecting evil humans.

Web site should restrict comments

As a former Oak Harbor resident for a long time I really enjoy reading the online version of the Whidbey News-Times but I sure do not like that now there are all these personal comments added. There are more comments than news lately, and by the sound of the comments it is mostly young folks looking for a place to sound off and go back and forth between themselves.
