As the dust from the first-ever Whidbey Island Area Fair settles in the arena, the vendor tents vanish and the barns empty, thanks are due to the many, many folks who made our 88th fair a success.

The Island County Fair Association did a wonderful fair this year. The grounds were friendly and clean each day. The fair staff was very accommodating to the patrons.

The Whidbey Island Fair was great family fun, a wonderful slice of home. It was a gorgeous day with horse competitions, vegetable art, Chicken Olympics, kids crafts, hot dogs and ice cream. Returning to my car, I found a booklet filled with religious intolerance toward Muslims and racist hatred under the windshield. What a sad way to end the day. While I hope the person responsible is an off-islander, in case you are local, may I say I think there are better uses of your time.

The granite mask recovered from Perego’s Lagoon, that some readers have conjectured to resemble museum curator Rick Castellano, is in reality a Salish People’s Guardian or carrying stone. It is intended to protect a village or important gathering site and give definition to boundaries without need of title.

Property owner has no plans to sell

Articles in the news media have informed me that the city of Oak Harbor plans to displace Pioneer Automotive so that it can site a sewer treatment plant on Pioneer Way. (Former location of Frontier Chevrolet-Pontiac.) No one from the city has contacted the owner, Redneck Properties LLC. The property is not for sale.

During my 20 years as a Whidbey Island resident, I have become increasingly concerned about preserving the quality of life in Island County while it moves ahead with responsible growth management. This year’s election for Island County commissioner is not about party affiliation, but about selecting the best candidate to give Island County thoughtful and experienced leadership in these difficult times. I want to be sure the candidate I choose understands Island County, its people and our needs. When this happens we will be well represented.

Oak Harbor Soroptimists would like to thank all of our loyal fireworks patrons who supported our booth this year! It really does make a difference to try and keep the proceeds from such booths local! We have sold “safe and sane” fireworks for over 10 years and have used the proceeds for many local projects such as scholarships and health screenings for women and girls who could not otherwise afford them.

Another property tax problem

This is in response to Robert Louge’s Aug. 1 letter regarding property tax issues. We had a different situation with taxes but can appreciate his frustration.
