Sumner officials hope Vegas trip pays off in bid to lure new businesses

As the effects of Initiative 747’s 1 percent revenue cap continues to wear on cities around the state, economic development has become a vital part of city efforts and Sumner is no different. As part of a commercial recruiting effort to attract more stores to the city and increase its tax base, three representatives from Sumner recently attended the International Conference of Shopping Centers convention in Las Vegas.

Sumner City Council member: 'Time for Sumner to stop being the parking lot for the region'

Following a meeting to discuss joint parking solutions for Sounder commuters between a minority of councilmembers from Sumner and Puyallup and a brief discussion during the May 27 Study Session, the Sumner City council was expected to vote Monday night to direct staff to create an ordinance that would impose a moratorium on parking structures throughout the city. Councilmember Matt Richardson is leading the push for a moratorium to try and prevent Sound Transit from building a parking garage on Traffic Avenue.

A-plus! Sumner refinances bonds, gets rating upgrade

A decision to refinance two of the city’s outstanding bonds will lead to a savings to the city and an upgrade to the city’s obligation debt bond rating from A to A+. The decision to refinance at a lower interest rate two outstanding bonds totaling $4.7 million should save the city about $225,000 over the next 10 years.

The city of Sumner debuted its new branding campaign this past month at the Internation Conference of Shopping Centers annual convention in Las Vegas. Using the tag line “Come on in!,” Sumner’s newest promotional effort is a tool kit of sorts to brand the city as a well-planned small town with a forward-thinking mindset.

With motorists facing sky-high fuel prices even before Memorial Day, the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is stepping up motor vehicle fuel pump inspections to make sure drivers are getting their money’s worth. The state’s 49,000 registered fuel pumps are inspected every 28 months on average. Washington vehicles consume more than four billion gallons of gas and diesel fuel a year.

High snowpack makes state rivers unusually strong — and dangerous

Near-record snowpacks in Washington mountains ensure that rivers will be very cold, and run high and fast as snowpacks begin to melt. Even water from behind dams will be cold.
