Orcas Island to feature 'giant' capture the flag match | Rec Briefs

Children and youth ages 7-18 are invited for a giant game of Capture the Flag at Buck Park, July 4 from 10-noon There will also be egg toss, relay races, Egg-on-a-Spoon Race, and other fun outdoor games.

Olympic rower to offer adult rowing class in San Juans

Orcas Island Rowing Association (OIRA) is offering adult rowing classes taught by head coach Tina Brown, who is an Olympic rower and has coached extensively both at the college and junior level.

Girls basketball camp

High school varsity girls basketball coach, Terry Moran-Hodge, and girls from the varsity squad will lead a basketball camp July 7-9 (3:00-5:00) for girls entering grades 5-9. There will be individual and group instruction. Girls will learn how to play Viking style basketball. Scrimmaging will be separated into two groups. This camp is for players who would like to play on middle school, junior varsity, and varsity teams as will as girls who do not plan to play on a team and would like to learn skills and have fun. This is an opportunity to learn from varsity players, meet the coach early in your career, and make an impression. All levels of players are welcome. The cost of the camp ($45) includes a camp t-shirt. Pre-registration is encouraged although girls may register on the day of the camp. Funds generated will go towards the girls basketball program. Full and partial scholarships are available by calling the Orcas Rec. Program office (376-5339). Registration forms are available the public library, on line at www.orcasrec.org, and at the Rec. Program office in the Senior Center.

Golf challenge benefits Turtleback and the SJ Preservation Trust July 13

All levels of golfers welcome, islanders and visitors alike! A fun-filled day of golf, food, friends and prizes galore including round trip airline tickets to anywhere in the US and a timeshare vacation! Net proceeds will be donated to the San Juan Preservation Trust specifically to maintain the trails and beauty of Turtleback Mountain.

Orcas baseball, softball players win all-league honors

Eight members of the Orcas Island girls’ varsity fastpitch softball team and two players on the Viking boys’ baseball team have been named to post-season All-league teams.

Parish and North place 10th in Rowing Nationals

Sam Parish and Barrett North competed in the Men’s Lightweight 2x (double) rowing event at the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championship in Cincinnati, Ohio from June 13 to 15.

Orcas kids build and fly planes

On Saturday June 28 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., the Orcas Radio Control Aircraft Society (ORCAS) will host a “Kid Build and Fly” event on their flying field at the north end of Mt. Baker Road.

Lopez Island sports squads win scholar-athlete awards

Lopez Island High School Athletic Director Larry Berg said recently, This was quite a year winning league championships in football, volleyball, boys basketball,?girls golf, and boys track; going to the State playoffs in volleyball, boys basketball, girls track, boys track, and girls golf; winning the District ?special sportsmanship award girls basketball; and being the State Academic Champions in girls golf with special academic?awards for boys golf, boys track, and girls track.

Orcas Island looking to field four adult softball squads

The Orcas Island Recreation Program is looking for four teams for this summers softball league. Adult softball will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:50 to 7:30 p.m. at Buck Park startng July 1.

Adult sailing lessons available on Orcas Island in June and July

This summer, Sail Orcas will offer adult sailing lessons. The 12-hour courses are offered during June and July. Volunteer instructors are all experienced, local sailors, providing personalized instruction to just two students per course.

Orcas Recreation has partnered with many Orcas Island childrens organizations to create a Web site that is a virtual one-stop shopping of the community resources for youth on the island. At Orcas Rec, we want the community to know that every group we can think of is listed on the youth resource page at www.orcasrec.org, said Didier Ginçig, Coordinator of the Orcas Island Recreation Program.

San Juan School District's athletic budget restored

Down by $800,000 at the half, the San Juan Island School Board last week disclosed that by the end of the third quarter, they had nearly made a comeback, closing on their opponent — a nearly 10 percent budget shortfall — to less than $100,000. With three months to go, the $100,000 in cuts, which would have eliminated the entire athletic budget, has been averted thanks to an overwhelming and committed team effort and a spectacular end-of-the-quarter play by Islanders Bank, who came up with the last $5,400 to restore the high school’s athletic program to last year’s funding levels.

EWU soccer coaches put San Juan girls through the ringer

It’s soccer camp for the high school, and an unusual one for local players. Wolverine Coach Mark Fishaut called in some coaches of a quality not normally seen on-island. George Hageage and his wife Tamara run the women’s soccer program at Eastern Washington University. They came to the island last week to offer a soccer camp for Fishaut’s team. Some 29 girls and three boys signed up for the week-long camp.

Petermans bicycle to S.F. for women’s health

Friday Harbor High School graduates Amber and Kelsea Peterman bicycled from Seattle to San Francisco to raise money for – and awareness of – women’s health issues in sub-Saharan Africa.

Bates takes San Juan Open golf tournament for second time

Ron Bates won his second San Juan Open, shooting a par 71 on Saturday’s first round and finishing Sunday with a 78. Bates’ combined score for both rounds was 149.

Island Rec is offering a sailing class taught by and for women, the weekend of July 11-13.

Island Rec sailing classes got off to a windy start last week. Using boats generously provided by the Sailing Foundation, two classes of aspiring sailors came to Percich Pond to test the waters.

Deadline tonight to fully restore athletic budget

San Juan Island Schools Superintendent Michael Soltman reported that $17,600 has been raised toward a goal of $23,000 needed to fully restore the athletic program for next year.
