The Bainbridge Majors baseball All-Stars kicked off district play with two big wins in the Little League District tournament at Art Mikelsen Field in Port Orchard over the weekend.

It was a year to remember for the Bainbridge fastpitch team this season. The Spartans defeated Holy Names for the first time in recent memory as they raced through the regular season losing just one game and won its first Metro League Mountain Division title.

For those baseball fans dismayed with the escapades of the Seattle Mariners – they of the 28-50 record at press-time – can take a trip back to yesteryear with the “Grand Old Game,” an exhibition baseball game played on the Fourth of July. Put on by the Bainbridge Historical Baseball Society, this year’s contest takes place at the baseball field at Bainbridge High School at 9 a.m. and pits the Bainbridge Reds “All-Stars” against the Winslow “Homestead” Grays.

The South Kitsap Babe Ruth All-Stars kept the Bainbridge All-Stars from knocking the ball around on Sunday like they did on Friday, defeating them 16-4 and 13-5 to win the District 8 title at Battle Point Park.

It was a tough year for the Bainbridge baseball team. Injuries to numerous players – including its top returning pitcher in Colin Feldtman – and a lot of bad luck kept the Spartans from making a serious charge to the playoffs. They started the season 5-1 and were ranked high in the 3A polls. But then came a long losing streak that dropped Bainbridge out of the rankings and the playoffs altogether.

In a back and forth game, it’s the little things that can cost you. That was the case for the Ice, as a dropped fly ball led to the Diamonds scoring the winning runs in its last at-bat to defeat the Ice 8-6 in a tightly contested Bainbridge Island Little League Majors softball championship Wednesday night at Strawberry Field. It’s the third title for the Diamonds in the last four years.

Kitsap BlueJackets looking for another playoff shot

Last season, the BlueJackets finished 24-18 and took second in the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League’s West Division. The team came up short in their first-ever playoff appearance, going down two games to one in the best-of-three series with rivals Corvallis (Ore.). Much of that team returns, as Kitsap brings back 12 BlueJackets from a year ago.

David Kerkoff returns to coach girls b-ball at King's West in Kitsap

David Kerkoff, former co-head coach of the King's West girls basketball team, is making his Warrior return. Kerkoff, who coached alongside Bryan Hanley for three years through the 2006-07 season, was named the new boys hoops coach at KW, replacing Rick Walker. He's a world and U.S. history teacher at the school.

Thunderbird Rodeo volunteers make it happen

Joe Weaver isn’t a cowboy. But for a weekend, the longtime Wrangler gets to be. Weaver is one of dozens of volunteers who make the Thunderbird Pro Benefit Rodeo happen. The rodeo, a benefit for Corey’s Day on the Farm and the Northwest Burn Foundation charities, relies on an all-volunteer base for everything from raising funds to raising fences on the Thunderbird Arena floor.

Former South Kitsap pitcher now catches for Olympic College

The field at South Kitsap High School didn’t look much different than the last time he stepped onto it. It was the vantage point that had changed. David Hammrich, a 2006 South graduate, returned to Port Orchard earlier this month as a member of the Olympia Athletics, a feeder team for the Kitsap BlueJackets. Both are summer-league teams for college players. When Hammrich was a senior at South, he started at cornerback and on the pitching mound for the Wolves. The latter led him to Auburn’s Green River Community College. Two years later, he’s a catcher at Olympic College.

Bremerton fastpitch duo gets honorable mention on all-county squad

Bremerton’s softball team had a rough year to say the least. The Lady Knights weren’t able to land a victory, ending the season 0-16. While the team came up empty in the win column, it showed perseverance by overcoming a coaching change midway through the year. It also rebounded from a midseason fold in 2007 that saw the team fall prey to off-field issues. Seniors Dechante Heggie and Britnay Mason set positive examples on the field, keeping the ’08 Lady Knights competitive. Athletes like Heggie and Mason were two bright spots in an otherwise tough season. That’s why both girls earned honorable mention on the 2008 All-Kitsap County Softball Team.

Olympic College to offer volleyball camps Aug. 4-8

Olympic College volleyball will be providing summer volleyball camps in the Kitsap area for interested youth between the ages of 9 and 18. The OC coaching staff and players will be on hand to teach skills including passing, setting, hitting and serving, as well as basic defense, court movement and tactical applications. Kitsap BlueJackets still winless

So far the road hasn’t been any kinder to the Kitsap BlueJackets. After getting swept by Corvallis (Ore.) last weekend to open the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League season, the BlueJackets (0-6 overall, 0-5 in WCCBL play) remained winless after falling 7-2 Tuesday and 9-4 Wednesday against the Wenatchee AppleSox (4-1 overall).

The Kitsap BlueJackets appeared to mirror the Seattle Mariners through the early part of the 2008 West Coast Collegiate Baseball League season. With slow bats, sloppy gloves and spotty pitching, the BlueJackets struggled to an 0-6 league start out of the gate, first getting swept by rivals Corvallis (Ore.) before dropping three in a row to Wenatchee to open a six-game road trip. Since then, however, the BlueJackets have been on fire, sweeping Moses Lake to finish the trip on a high note before busting out the brooms again this week at home against rival Bellingham. The BlueJackets slammed the Bells (4-8) into submission Wednesday, hitting not one but two grand slams in a 16-3 win.

Even though the beginning of our summer break isn’t top notch yet, the end of our school year was. Sports-wise, pretty much everyone came out on top. Boys’ soccer made it to quarterfinals in state. With seven athletes competing in state, the track team had three of them place in the top five and even one, Ruby Roberts, won a state title. Girls’ tennis sent a double team to state to compete as well. Boys’ baseball wasn’t far behind the mayhem either.

Puget Sound recreational crabbing areas will open at 7 a.m. July 2 for Marine Areas 6 (eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca), 7 South (San Juan Islands), 8-1 (Deception Pass to East Point), 8-2 (East Point to Possession Point), 9 (Admiralty Inlet), 10 (Seattle/Bremerton), 11 (Tacoma/Vashon), and 12 (Hood Canal) will open Wednesdays through Saturdays only, plus the entire Labor Day weekend. There will be closure Sept. 1 for a catch assessment. These areas will reopen if recreational harvest quotas have not been met.

North Kitsap swimmers clean up at Special Olympics

What began as a small, unstructured program some 25 years ago is now the thriving lifeline for 25 Special Olympic swimmers. Judy Chase, a Special Olympics swim coach for more than 25 years, said when she first began working with the program there were only about 10 participants and it was never intended to be competitive. In fact, the team didn’t even attend the state competition for at least seven years. Multiple lives changed later, the North Kitsap Special Olympics Viking swim team has attended state for the last 15 years.

Kingston native Ryan Gabrielli has a knack for bowling. His mother Carol Gabrielli said the 13-year-old has always been a kid who excels at whatever he likes. Apparently, Ryan likes bowling. The Sylvan Way Christian School upcoming eighth-grader picked up his first bowling ball in September. His first average was a 78 and he rolled gutter ball after gutter ball. But just seven months after his string of gutter balls Ryan entered his first tournament — the Washington State U.S. Bowling Congress Championship Tournament — in Tacoma.
