It almost doesn’t seem like they’d ever broken up. Ruxton Towers, back on stage together at Winterland last Friday night after months-long hiatus, cranking out the old, spacey, uncomfortably indie rock with a newfound higher octane energy and attitude. More riffs, more chops, more determined vocals, same old Ruxton Towers. It all sounded a bit stubborn. But it seems that’s somewhat characteristic of the Towers themselves.

Americans demand cheap and abundant food to nourish our bodies and feed our need for decadence. Nary between forkfuls do we pause to ponder where our food came from, who took the time to create it or the economic, health or political impact of what we pile on our plates. This documentary, which will show at 7 p.m. July 1 at the Norm Dicks Government Center Auditorium in Bremerton, chronicles the experiences of two college buddies who turn into Iowa farm boys to answer those questions.

Kirkland author brings sex ed to Bainbridge women over 50

In 2006 a group compiled their findings into “Still Sexy After All These Years? The 9 Unspoken Truths About Women’s Desire Beyond 50.” Since publishing the book, the Kirkland-based Leah Kliger has taken on the speaker and workshop circuit, including a stop this Wednesday afternoon at the Bainbridge Commons titled, “The Real Truth About Intimacy and Sexuality for Women Beyond 50.” Through the women-only workshop, with its emphasis on give-and-take discussion rather than lecturing, Kliger hopes to help women dispel both mysteries and myths, and reveal sexuality in a light that many may not have considered.

In his new novel — “The Other,” set to hit shelves June 3 — David Guterson, 52, traveled back in time in his mind, to the yesteryears of innocence and idealism, following a transition into responsibility of adulthood. The story, he said, revolves around a lifetime friendship between two starkly contrasted Seattle kids who find a common bond in love of the outdoors, love of literature and an affection for mind alteration.

Wolfe Elem. to use grant money for tubano drums

The music room at Wolfle Elementary School will beat with a whole lot of rhythm and heart next fall, thanks to A Bright Future Grant awarded last month. The grant, in the amount of $3,665.25, will be used to purchase about 20 tubano drums students will use with their music teacher, Michael McCurdy, to learn the techniques of rhythm. The drums have feet to stand off the ground and are the perfect height for kids.

Lighthouse festival comes to Point No Point County Park July 19

Have a great summer day at The Friends of Point No Point Lighthouse “Footprints in the Sand” event at Point No Point County Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 19. As a part of the Washington Lightkeepers Association’s annual Great Lighthouse Hunt 2008, activities will be going on all day at Point No Point including making footprint candles in the sand with the help of Kitsap County Facilities, Parks and Recreation staff.

An eagle glides low through old-growth forest, something ragged and bloody clutched in its talons. Two crows are in hot pursuit, screaming and dodging the trunks of ancient Douglas fir. It takes several minutes for the eagle to elude its pursuers. Then the big bird doubles back to land on a massive nest of sticks set at the top of a 100-foot tree. It’s a sight few modern humans will ever see. But at Camp Indianola, it’s just another moment in paradise.

It’s not all that uncommon. A person suffers a head injury, perhaps during a car collision, and is taken to the hospital for a CAT scan and MRI, and is eventually put in a neck brace. Their body heals and their life gets back to normal, but often “normal” becomes out of reach. That’s because of a missing step, says neurologist and nuerofeedback practitioner Thomas Budzynski. There’s one thing the hospital trip and subsequent rest didn’t address: the possibility of organic injuries in the brain.
