The protagonist of Carol Cassella’s debut novel improbably turns anesthesia into poetry. From the first paragraph of “Oxygen,” Dr. Marie Heaton’s reverence for her work putting people to sleep comes through in a way that’s – oh, let’s just get it over with – breathtaking. Of course, as with any juicy and well-crafted story, there’s more to Marie than she herself lets on, and her tendency to over-embrace the rigors of her job hint at conflict and denial that any reader who loves her work, perhaps too much, will identify with.

Three Dog Night to headline Kitsap County Fair

Grand Funk Railroad may have drawn a huge crowd to last year’s Kitsap County Fair & Stampede, but Fair and Special Events Manager Frank Abbott predicts this year’s entertainment lineup will cause even more of a buzz. Three Dog Night will take center stage at this year’s Kitsap County Fair & Stampede in August. Canadian country band Emerson Drive also will take to the stage. Both acts are sponsored by GEICO.

Heaton’s an anesthesiologist in Bainbridge authoress Carol Cassella’s debut novel, “Oxygen,” in bookstores July 1.

Kingston Harbor Days Festival down at the port

Live music will highlight Saturday evenings in August when Kingston Concerts on the Cove come to Mike Wallace Park at the Port of Kingston. The free concerts will be a festive addition to Kingston community life, since Tunes on Tuesday will no longer be held.

The 33rd annual Indianola Strawberry Fest will be held 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 5 at Indianola Living Hope Foursquare Church.

With gas prices increasing, visit the towns in Kitsap County and enjoy the local sites and sounds. All of us in Port Gamble invite you to wander our quaint town and visit our shops – look for new ones that have opened or take in a festival or two. We have a lot going on for the month of July and look for two new festivals in August – Paddle Kitsap and the Great Peninsula Future Festival.

As I write this, our calendars say June, but it feels more like fall outside. Hopefully, the weather will have warmed up by the time this article goes to press. In the meantime, however, this is great weather for reading books, watching movies and other library pursuits!

Imprints a daily human ritual

It was late 1959. Gasoline cost .31¢ a gallon. Kitsap Mall was a peaceful pasture, and a small group of North Kitsap Junior High School PTA members planned their first art show. The original annual one-day program in February 1960 raised $237. The revenue earned from .50¢ adult and .25¢ child admission fees helped support the junior high PTA.

As the first Friday of July falls squarely on July 4 this year, art galleries in Bremerton have focused their exhibits quirkily around the Independence Day theme, and will be debuting with receptions that day. Galleries on Bainbridge, including Bainbridge Arts and Crafts which recently received a $1 million endowment that made headlines, will be waiting it out, hosting their first Friday parties during the second week July 11 due to the nuttiness of the island’s Grand Ole Fourth celebration.

Every year, for the past probably 14, Jr. Cadillac has kicked off Bremerton’s free concert series — Concerts on the Boardwalk. That goes unchanged this year, they’ll throw down at 6 p.m. July 11.

Americans demand cheap and abundant food to nourish our bodies and feed our need for decadence. Nary between forkfuls do we pause to ponder where our food came from, who took the time to create it or the economic, health or political impact of what we pile on our plates. That’s where “King Corn” comes in. This documentary, which will show at 7 p.m. July 1 at the Norm Dicks Government Center Auditorium in Bremerton, chronicles the experiences of two college buddies who turn into Iowa farm boys to answer those questions. The Kitsap Community and Agricultural Alliance is sponsoring the showing.
