Crews were dispatched just before 11 p.m. on Thursday following a report of a boat ablaze. Because of the large potential posed by marina fire, the incident initially drew a big response.

There’s no doubt that people, especially those living in a small town whose populace has a high political IQ and loves a spirited power struggle, have a tendency to want to put neighbors in office who share their own political or consensus-building views. That makes sense, at least if it’s done on an individual basis and important personality traits such as morality, ethics, and honesty are also taken into account.

Give SoundRunner adequate time | Editorial

Kingston port commissioners were wise to not pull the plug on SoundRunner on Sept. 26. But the reprieve they gave the passenger ferry service is shortsighted. The Port of Kingston revived the Kingston-to-Seattle passenger ferry May 31 with the understanding it would take about four years to build ridership to the point where SoundRunner would be self-sustaining. SoundRunner has used up its first-year port subsidy, and that has commissioners worried. As the old saying goes, you’ve got to spend money to make money.

I’ve been talking a lot lately about the connection between salmon, habitat and treaty rights. That connection is pretty simple. No habitat equals no salmon.
End the reign — It’s time to put an end to the Bill Mahan dynasty on the Bremerton Port Commission. Mahan had the good sense to not face the voters again after the infamous and costly “stealth tax” debacle of 2006. However, the same political insiders club that supported Mahan has found a political clone to run as his replacement.

Choose Schulze — I’ve had conversations with people who wonder if Jeanie Schulze would consistently defend administrative positions. That notion could not be further from the truth. Jeanie will participate in discussions and propose alternatives as an elected school board member.

On Oct. 14, our student body leaders sponsored and led a powerful assembly geared toward building greater levels of empathy in our students. We are a proud community here at Kingston Middle School, and this is one example of our students taking the lead in promoting a positive school culture.
