Challenge grant offered to Friends of Lopez Island Pool

Friends of Lopez Island Pool (FLIP) has received a $5,000 challenge grant from a supporting family foundation to raise immediate funds to pay off phase-two planning and site development. The challenge will effectively double the value of each donor’s gift and give a clean start to phase three of FLIP’s plan to build a pool facility.

On Sat. March 20 there will be a public forum held by the school board to discuss possible cuts to the school budget. The meeting will be held in the School Library from 10 a.m. to noon. Superintendent Dr Linda Martin said: “its purpose is to get input about possible budget cuts...we feel really stongly that we need to hear from the community.”

San Juan United Way releases 2009 fund-raising report

United Way of San Juan County is pleased to announce that more than $152,600 was raised during their 2009 campaign. As a result of the generous support of Islanders, thirty-one local programs providing essential services for individuals and families were funded. This meant that the United Way was able to give grants to agencies focusing on education, health and wellness, recreation, mentoring programs and services for seniors. These programs benefit a wide array of island residents; from toddlers to seniors.

Each summer, the San Juan Island’s resident pods of orca whales come together in what are called “greeting ceremonies.” In this spirit, The Whale Museum of Friday Harbor invites all orca supporters to the fourth Annual Celebration of the “Orca Greeting Ceremony.” This fundraising dinner and auction will be held on Saturday, May 22 at the Mullis Center in Friday Harbor. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a happy hour and silent auction followed by a gourmet dinner, live auction and dessert auction.

The terrible tragic death of veteran trainer Dawn Brancheau at Sea World Florida has suddenly generated a nationwide public examination of our feelings about captive orca shows.
